Nursing in the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery
Room for personal and professional growth
At the Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital, we care for patients with a wide range of surgical conditions - from routine procedures to complex operations such as liver and kidney transplants and operations on the pancreas, oesophagus, stomach, liver or intestines. In this demanding environment, the nursing profession is an indispensable part of the interprofessional treatment team.
Our nursing staff work closely with doctors, therapists and other specialist disciplines. This interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaboration is particularly important after major surgical procedures or in the case of complex disease progression. It helps us to recognise risks at an early stage and tailor care to the individual needs of patients.
Continuous professional development is an important aspect of our work. Our nursing staff regularly take part in further and advanced training, both internally and externally, and actively contribute their knowledge to everyday clinical practice. This includes, for example, the specialised care of transplant patients, wound management, nutrition and blood glucose management after pancreas removal. In this way, we ensure that our care is always based on the latest nursing and medical developments.
In addition to professional expertise, empathetic and patient-centred care is particularly important to us. Many of our patients are faced with long and challenging treatment processes and serious illnesses. Our nursing staff are there to support them during this time - whether by actively listening, providing guidance or creating emotional security. This trusting relationship is an important support in the treatment process for many patients, but also for their relatives and carers.
We see nursing care as an essential part of a holistic and patient-centred care concept. We not only focus on physical health, but also on the psychosocial needs of patients. In close cooperation with the attending physicians and other specialists, we help to ensure that our patients receive the best possible nursing and medical care, as well as being understood on a human level.
Nursing at the Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery offers the opportunity to work in a varied and dynamic field that is both challenging and rewarding, while also providing plenty of room for personal and professional growth.
