Intensive Care Centre

3 wards benefit from multi-professional standards

Intensive care unit 1

What can you expect here?

In our specialised intensive care unit, we care for neurosurgical intensive care patients and patients with ear, nose and throat tumours with the highest level of expertise and individual nursing. Our aim is to offer patients and/or their relatives the best possible medical care during a difficult time.

Our intensive care unit specialises in the treatment of patients with serious neurosurgical illnesses and injuries as well as tumours in the ear, nose and throat region. We offer comprehensive care to ensure the best possible healing process. Our specialised measures include the continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure and the implementation and nursing care of external ventricular drainage.

In addition to neurosurgical care, we also treat patients with tumours in the ear, nose and throat region. These operations require targeted and careful treatment and aftercare, which we provide in our intensive care unit.

  3. Our wound experts monitor wound care to prevent infection and promote healing. They provide advice and support to the interdisciplinary team and ensure the best possible treatment.
  4. Our team also includes highly qualified practical instructorswho ensure that nursing care is kept up to date. They support our nursing staff to ensure optimal patient care. In addition, our practice instructors coordinate an ongoing training programme - our certified megacode trainers guarantee a quick and competent response in an emergency. Regular training ensures that we are also optimally prepared in critical moments.
  5. Through our palliative nurse ensures that pain and symptoms are alleviated through attentive care. At the same time, the emotional and psychological needs of patients are addressed.

Competence of nursing staff - responsibility and expertise
On our intensive care unit, nursing staff can fully develop their expertise and care for highly complex patients. In addition to daily nursing care, the nursing staff are also responsible for infusion management, ventilation management and emergency management. Thanks to their in-depth training and ongoing training programmes, they ensure that all medical procedures are carried out professionally and safely.

Our team - diverse and interdisciplinary
We work on an equal footing and in flat hierarchies, which promotes excellent communication and collaboration. Our colourful and diverse team from different nations is made up of doctors (neurosurgical and anaesthetics), nurses and therapists from various disciplines. This interdisciplinary co-operation ensures holistic and highly qualified patient care.

Intensive care unit 2

A 12-bed intensive care unit

Intensive Care Unit 2, also known as Neurology 4, is a central component of the Intensive Care Centre at the Kopfklinik. This ultra-modern ward is part of an integrated organisational structure that works in harmony with Intensive Care Unit 1, which specialises in neurosurgery, and the Stroke Unit. This close co-operation is coordinated by an experienced and multi-member management team who are passionate about ensuring the highest standards of patient care.

A continuous and open exchange between these three departments is of paramount importance to us. Only through this close cooperation can we optimally utilise the different specialist skills and thus benefit from jointly developed, multi-professional treatment and care standards. This enables us to offer our patients first-class care based on the latest medical findings.

Our 12-bed intensive care unit 2 primarily treats neurological patients. The most common clinical pictures include ischaemic strokes, cerebral haemorrhages, epilepsies as well as autoimmunological and neurodegenerative diseases. Thanks to the supra-regional FAST network, which extends far beyond the Rhine-Neckar district, numerous acute stroke patients reach our centre. In this critical phase of thrombectomy, they receive comprehensive care from our dedicated multi-professional team in Intensive Care Unit 2. This team not only specialises in neurological emergencies, but also provides emergency care for the entire head clinic and other surrounding hospitals and centres through the REA team.

In addition, we also care for post-operative patients from the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery and ear, nose and throat medicine on our ward. Emergency patients from all disciplines of the hospital also receive competent and rapid care here.

We are proud to work in such a dynamic and diverse environment, where we can help improve the lives of our patients every day and support them in difficult times.

Stroke Unit Heidelberg

High-tech meets heart

Here we care for patients with recent strokes and other neurological diseases - often in a very critical phase of their lives. Together with their relatives, we support them with expertise, empathy and commitment.

Our ward specialises in acute care and early rehabilitation after strokes. This is complemented by modern diagnostics and close co-operation within the interdisciplinary team.

Every year, we care for around 2,200 patients on 20 beds - including many after lysis therapy or thrombectomy. Diseases such as Guillain-Barré syndrome or myasthenia gravis are also part of our daily routine. This means: lots of neurological expertise, plenty of variety and the opportunity to really make a difference.

Our concept - nursing in a strong team
We have nurses with different backgrounds working hand in hand: healthcare and nursing, intensive care and geriatric care. Some already have the additional qualification "Stroke Nurse", others are currently undergoing IMC or specialist further training.

Our team is complemented by physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists, doctors, social services and medical assistants. Our team and care assistants take care of the logistics - leaving more time for what really counts: good care.

Induction and development
Your start with us is structured and accompanied: five months of induction, including eight weeks with 1:1 support from experienced colleagues and practice supervisors. After that, you will grow into your role step by step - with a strong team behind you.

Thanks to the connection to the intensive care centre of the head clinic, we benefit from professional exchange, flexible staff deployment and a reliable duty rota.

Innovation room - your ideas are in demand
Since 2023, we have had the "Stroke Unit Innovation Room": a platform where ideas become real projects - whether it's about new work processes, creative tools or better team quality. Many improvements come directly from the team.

Twice a week, all professional groups come together in short ward meetings - for dialogue, transparency and good cooperation.
